Real Weddings

Remember When…

Our latest, vintage-inspired photoshoot had the BHLDN team digging through old photo albums, reminiscing with our families, and thinking about weddings of days gone by. At a team lunch (complete with everyone’s #1 comfort food—pizza), we shared our treasured photos, heirlooms, words of wisdom, traditions, and stories our families never get tired of retelling. We laughed, we cried, and we couldn’t keep it to ourselves. Read on for some of our favorite photos and love stories.

We were swooning over the glamorous gowns of the 1920s and 30s, like the one above worn by our Managing Director’s grandmother. Here’s what Catherine had to say about this special woman, “My beautiful, graceful, Southern belle grandmother has always been an inspiration to me. She was baptized, confirmed, and married in the same church in Richmond, Virginia. My aunt once referred to her a ‘spiritual warrior,’ which I didn’t fully understand until I was given her Bible at my father’s funeral. The pages were well-worn, many of them patched together with tape. Along with carefully recording every major family milestone, she had also tucked notes and clippings about being a loving mother, grandmother, and mother-in law into its highlighted pages. It makes my heart swell to think of all the time she spent thinking about us, worrying about us, and praying for us.”

One thing was clear: the key to a woman’s heart is making sure she always has her favorite treats. Our Stylist Caroline’s great-grandmother was sweet on sundaes, while our Copywriter Bailey’s grandma prefers daily coffee deliveries. Both are pictured above on their big days.

The 80s and 90s were not as kind to brides when it came to fashion, but our mom’s (and dads) rocked it nonetheless!

Our Marketing Assistant, CC, recounted this funny story of her parent’s wedding day (pictured above): “My parents will celebrate their 35th anniversary in December. My mom bought her wedding dress from a JC Penny catalog for $90 and she received it in the mail the day before her wedding. The day of, my dad was supposed to drive my mom to the church in the car they owned together. My dad was so nervous that he forgot to pick her up. My mom ended up walking the half-mile to the church in the rain in her wedding dress. She always says that my dad’s been making up for that for the past 35 years.”

We hope you enjoyed taking a stroll down memory lane with us! And don’t forget these important words about marriage from our Stylist Carolyn’s parents (below):
