For some, this fall marks a turn towards the come-as-you-are vibe of the 1970s. For others, it’s a celebration of boldness—high shine, vivid colors, and fanciful embellishment. When it comes to hair, similar themes ring true, running the gamut from semi-undone to slick and modern. Whether you’re a bride, guest, or just looking for inspiration, read on for a few of our favorite trends.
The Modern Ponytail
It’s arguably the season’s go-to style, and (good news for you) it doesn’t get more effortless than this. On runways, stylists took a more considered approach with high sheen, sleek parts, thoughtful placement, and sophisticated ties (black ribbons were particularly popular). It’s youthful and modern and just a touch nostalgic. Also, a perfect way to show off a killer pair of earrings.
Weddings offer the perfect opportunity to ornament your tresses; luckily, hair accessories are having a moment. Altuzarra, Chanel, Rodarte, and Issey Miyake (to name a few) took on the trend with everything from statement headbands and velvet bows to ornate clips, bejeweled combs, and a plethora of pins.
Center parts, loose waves, and minimal styling made an appearance at Stella McCartney, Prada, and Fendi shows.
While not a classifiable trend, per se, there was a notable celebration of authenticity and personal style for fall. You could argue every designer did this, but Alexander Wang, Simone Rocha, Marc Jacobs, and Thom Browne are worth mentioning. For hair, this played out in slept-on chignons, loose braids, 40s-meets-punk updos, and natural curls. The takeaway? Go with what’s representative of you. Oftentimes, it’s the boldest statement you can make.
