Real Weddings

There’s always a buzz around the BHLDN office when we get images from one of Magi Kernan’s dreamy photoshoots, and the latest from an elopement in Havana, Cuba are no exception. With Havana’s technicolor streets as her background, Magi captured the intimate moments between Maria Karla and Dayron on their special day. Read on for more about this shoot and for tips on finding the right photographer for your destination wedding.

Tell us a little about Maria Karla and Dayron?

They are super sweet together! She was only 19 when they met, and they’ve been together for almost 3 years. I was so lucky to be a part of their elopement!

How did they find you to be their photographer?

I was headed to Cuba and wanted to do a shoot while I was there to add to my portfolio. I reached out to a contact in Cuba who connected me to Maria Karla and Dayron.  It worked out perfectly! But generally, clients find me from publications, social media, or contact me via the website.

How often do you travel for destination shoots?

I shoot weddings and engagements abroad several times a year! I also travel often for commercial and editorial shoots with brands and professional surfers.

What should brides look for in a destination photographer?

When hiring a photographer for your destination wedding, be sure that the photographer is an experienced traveler. I’ve learned to always arrive early, keep my gear in my carry-on, separate memory cards, back up to multiple hard drives, and remove film from the airport scanners.

Other than that, I have the same recommendations as I would for finding a photographer for any wedding. First, view a few full wedding galleries to make sure they have consistent work. Second, ask how long they have been in business, read reviews, and look for professional associations/ insurance/ etc. And finally, make sure you like their vibe! A photographer totally sets the tone for your wedding day, so they should be willing to FaceTime, meet for coffee, and answer any questions you have.

What has been your favorite place to shoot?

My all-time favorite location? I love Morocco for the colors; anywhere vibrant and full of culture is my favorite kind of place to shoot. I also love Tahiti for the clear blue waters when I am doing underwater photos!
